April is 🌎 Earth Month 🌎, which is a great time to start (or continue!) thinking about how we can help take care of our planet!
Just like everything else we talk about here at CLEAN.FIT, we believe in starting SMALL. Tiny, positive changes can add up to something big, especially when it comes to taking care of our beautiful green earth.
Read on for 10 simple ways to help take care of our planet.👇 These actions aren’t hard to embrace when you approach them one at a time, but they can have a huge impact because they help tackle some of our planet’s most pressing concerns. Doing something small is WAY better than doing nothing at all!! 🌱
🛍 Use LESS PLASTIC - opt for reusable items instead. Did you know that there are five trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean?! 😨 It’s predicted that by 2040, our environmentally destructive habits will put the planet on an altered course of history that we won’t be able to turn back from.😮 Disposable plastic coffee cups (including lids), straws, plastic bags, and water bottles are the worst offenders when it comes to the plastic trash accumulating globally in oceans and rivers. So, how can you get on the plastics elimination train?
➡️ Replace plastic bags with reusable bags, use reusable cups, straws, water bottles, etc. Choose one or two items to begin with and add more as the habit takes hold!
💡 Save energy. Always switch off the light, fan, or A.C. when you walk out of the room/house or don’t need them, and unplug or shut off electronic devices you’re not using them to save energy.
➡️ Try to make better use of sunlight and avoid using artificial light during the daytime. Along with helping the environment, it saves on your electricity bill as well!
♻️ Separate and recycle. You can help reduce pollution just by putting that soda can in the recycling bin. It really does make a difference! By reducing air and water pollution and saving energy, recycling offers an important environmental benefit: it reduces emissions of greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbon!
➡️ Separate and recycle the different types of wastes such as organic, inorganic, plastic, glass, paper, and cardboard and ensure you are only putting things in the recycling bin that belong there! Also, make sure to clean food and other yucky stuff off before tossing it in the recycling bin.
💧 Don’t waste water. Water is a natural resource and its supply is finite, therefore, to preserve our environment and minimize the effect of drought, it is necessary to conserve water.
➡️ To do so, make sure taps are completely turned off, take short showers, do not keep the tap water running when you are washing dishes or brushing teeth, etc. It takes a great number of resources to get fresh and clean water delivered to your house, so try to limit waste and use wisely!
📃 Go paperless or use less paper. We all take print-outs of receipts, documents, tickets, flyers, etc in our day-to-day life. 😬 Many trees are cut down every year to produce paper, so by saying no to paper, you can do a huge favor to conserve the environment!
➡️ Try instead taking pictures on your phone of important info, taking notes on your electronic device, and reusing paper when possible.
⛽️ Save fuel. Meaning, be car-conscious! If you can, stay off the road two days a week or more.
➡️ You can try to instead walk or bike, which are ways to reduce greenhouse gasses PLUS get some good cardio and burn some calories while you do it. 😉 You can also try combining errands – hit the school, grocery store, and dog daycare in one trip! And if you live in an area that’s not walkable, take advantage of your local mass transit if you can, or carpool. Even one car off on the road makes a difference 🚗
🌳 Plant more trees. A 2019 study from the Swiss Institute of Integrative Biology suggests that planting 1 trillion trees would dramatically reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and significantly help stop global climate change.
➡️ If you’re lucky enough to have a garden at home, don’t hesitate to plant a tree of your own! They provide shade, oxygen, even fruit, and can be home to beautiful species 🐝… Their benefits are countless, plus, you can always hang a hammock in their shade and relax! 🧘♀️
🗑 Start composting. If you haven’t already tried composting, what are you waiting for?! Seriously, composting is the simplest, most effective way to reduce trash. Composting is low-cost and often easier than stuffing your organic waste into garbage bags and hauling it to the curb to throw away. Not only that, compost is the Holy Grail of gardening additives. It is full of nutrients to help plants grow and vastly improves the soil structure of any gardening bed.
➡️ Today there are so many ways to compost, even if you live in an apartment. There are vermicomposters (worm composters) if you live in a small space, and compost tumblers if you have a yard, patio, or extra parking area. Vermin-proof, pest impermeable, apartment-friendly: there’s a composter for everyone.
🍅 Grow (or sprout) something to eat. If your backyard gets more than six hours of sunlight, you could be growing a portion of your week’s groceries!
➡️ Adding a few raised garden beds can help reduce your lawn maintenance routine and increase the quality of your diet by upping the freshness of your food. Home-grown fruits and vegetables are not only better for you, they’re better for the earth because they eliminate fuel needed to transport produce to market. And if you want something simpler, try growing sprouts for quick and easy greens during the winter months! 🌱
💰 Invest in the future. Donate to charities making change. Organizations across the globe are working on the issues covered above and more. By supporting their good work you can help them succeed.
➡️ There are many guides (like this one) to find out how you can make a difference, or contact the charity of your choice and ask how to help. Put your dollars to work where they matter the most. 🖤
