5 Things You Should Know Before You Buy CBD Oil

CBD oil has been all the hype lately - and for good reason! It’s been shown to provide 20+ health benefits, including treatment of schizophrenia, arthritis pain, IBS, insomnia, and more. It has even been shown to stop the growth of multiple cervical cancer cells!

It’s important to note that pure CBD oil does NOT contain THC - the infamous psychoactive compound found in marijuana responsible for giving users the euphoric “high” feeling.

Previously, all marijuana products were considered taboo and illegal, until recently: the FDA approved a CBD-based drug for the treatment of epilepsy. We suspect there will be many more to come.

We’re excited to share more about what to look for before purchasing CBD oil, from an expert: Shayda Torabi, co-founder of RESTART CBD!

You might have heard about CBD from your favorite health and wellness podcast, or maybe you’ve seen it as an add-on item at your local juice shop. CBD has been slowly making a presence, and now just about everyone is talking about this miracle oil.

But what is it exactly, and how do you know what to look for when buying a quality CBD oil? Below I’ll share 5 things you should know before you buy CBD.

Let’s start by breaking down what CBD stands for. CBD is short for for cannabidiol, a compound found in hemp and marijuana plants that relieves pain, reduces anxiety, and helps with sleep, etc. Our bodies naturally have cannabinoid receptors that are located throughout the body, and are part of our endocannabinoid system. The EndoCannabinoid System (ECS) is involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory.

CBD should also not be confused with THC. And while they are both cannabinoids, they do not affect the same receptors. CBD has its own unique properties and benefits. Which is why it’s becoming so popular as herbal medicine.

People have used CBD traditionally for thousands of years to treat various types of pain, but the medical community has only recently begun to study it again.

CBD products made from industrial hemp with THC levels lower than .03% are legal in all 50 states, however be careful with the products you buy. If your state still deems marijuana illegal, then you need to make sure you’re purchasing CBD products made from hemp with no or low levels of THC.

With the right information you’ll be able to decide which CBD product is right for you.

1. Where is the hemp grown?

It’s important to know where and how your product is produced. Hemp is a bioaccumulator, which means it takes on, or absorbs, what it’s around. So if the hemp plants are grown with pesticides or herbicides then the product could be sabotaged. That’s why it’s key to look for organically grown products, to ensure that you aren’t ingesting contaminated hemp. So the only way you can be sure that the CBD you’re buying is pure and free of foreign substances is by purchasing CBD from a source that can be traced all the way back to the field. And one that has been lab-tested by a third party.

2. How is the CBD is extracted?

The cheapest and easiest ways to extract CBD oil from hemp commonly involve harsh solvents that can leave chemical residue in the CBD oil. The best, and most reliable extraction method, uses carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction. With CO2 extraction, CBD is extracted under high pressure and at extremely low temperatures to pull out as much CBD as possible without introducing contaminants. Once the CO2 is no longer under intense pressure, it simply evaporates, leaving virtually no trace of extraction on the CBD oil. It’s the purest way to obtain CBD and any other extraction should raise a flag.

3. How much THC is in CBD Oil?

For some, having more than trace amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) might not be a big deal, but if you’re being drug tested at work, operating heavy machinery, or fall into a number of other categories, you may want to keep the THC to a zero or a bare minimum. Look for a certified CBD with low levels of THC (less than .03%), or zero THC. Many reputable sellers do offer products that have absolutely no THC. If you are concerned about keeping even trace amounts of THC out of your body, it’s best to look for those products and sellers.

4. What’s the difference between Full Spectrum and CBD Isolate?

In addition to CBD, “full” spectrum products contain additional cannabinoids (including THC), which is what makes them “full” spectrum. CBD Isolate is pure isolated CBD. Nothing else. As stated above, “full” spectrum will include trace amounts of THC so if that’s a concern of yours, you should pursue a product made with no THC. One thing to note, if a product is being advertised as “full” spectrum with no THC, that product is not “full” spectrum because it’s missing the THC. It would be considered “broad” spectrum.

It isn’t necessary for any other cannabinoid, including THC, to be present to experience the benefits of a single cannabinoid. For example, you don’t need THC to use CBD. CBD works great by itself, and for many people, it is preferable to use products that do not contain any THC.

There is definitely a strong debate about which is “better.” The bottom line is that CBD affects everyone differently, the product that works best for you is highly dependant on your own individual needs

5. How to know the CBD is potent and pure?

The only way to ensure the safety, quality and potency of CBD is to have it tested in a third-party accredited laboratory.

Accredited Laboratories Should Test to Ensure the CBD is Free Of:

  • Pesticides

  • Residual solvents (from the extraction process)

  • Bacteria and fungus

  • Foreign matter

  • Heavy metals

You don’t have to test the product yourself. Reputable companies will provide you with their own testing results. It’s important to do your research before buying a product, ask questions, educate yourself because that’s the best way to find the right CBD oil for you.

Once you find the right product and dosage, CBD can actually help provide relief. I personally use CBD oil twice daily, once in the morning to help combat daily anxiety and once at night to help aid in a restful nights sleep. We put our bodies through so much daily, so CBD is a natural way for me to find relief and get back to optimal balance.
