6 Reasons Why Monk Fruit Should Be Your New Favorite Sweetener

Let’s be honest: we can all use a little sweetness in our lives, especially right now!

But, it’s no secret that too much sugar is bad for you. Why? It’s essentially an empty calorie, meaning that it has calories but no nutrient value. It has also been shown to cause many health issues, such as:

  • Acne and accelerated skin aging

  • Increased risk of weight gain and obesity

  • Tooth cavities and decay

  • Increased risk of heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and depression

Most experts say that you should limit your sugar intake to no more than 30-40 grams a day max (which is about what is in a can of soda!).

So you might want to consider alternative sweeteners to sugar to cut back on your intake.

The problem? So many alternative sweeteners are terrible for you, too!

Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose are made of chemicals and yucky fake ingredients that have harmful effects that might even be worse than sugar itself!

Many of them have been shown to cause side effects like gas, bloating, allergic reactions, and even weight gain (which is ironic since many are touted as “diet” options) and therefore are controversial.

So then what do I choose?!

Good news - there is a 100% natural sweetener out there that doesn’t have the downsides of sugar or artificial sweeteners!

Monk fruit, or lo han guo, is just that - a fruit! To be specific, it’s a small green melon native to southern China that was named after the monks who discovered it and cultivated it centuries ago.

Monk fruit extract (or the juice of the monk fruit) is an amazing sugar alternative. It is 150-250 times sweeter than regular ole sugar, yet it has zero calories or carbs. Better yet: there are no known side effects!

On top of that - it has some really great benefits. Here are just a few:

#1. It doesn’t raise blood sugar

Monk fruit gets its sweetness from natural compounds called mogrosides so it doesn’t increase blood sugar levels (and actually, might even lower them!). The spike and fall of blood sugar levels are what cause that “sugar crash” feeling, and can lead to diabetes longer term. It’s also a good option for those who already have diabetes.

#2. It has free-radical fighting antioxidants

Studies have shown that mogroside compounds “significantly inhibited reactive oxygen species and DNA oxidative damage.” Antioxidants + calorie free sweetener?! Talk about a super sweetener!

#3. It’s calorie-free, which helps with your macros or weight loss goals

Monk fruit has no calories, carbs, or fat, so you don’t have to use any macros on it! You can save substantial calories by substituting monk fruit sweetener for table sugar throughout your day. The average person consumes ~300 calories a day just from added sugar alone - which equates to a pound of fat gain every 11 days!

#4. It’s anti-inflammatory

Monk fruit’s mogrosides are said to be anti-inflammatory. Reducing inflammation may help prevent many inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, allergies, skin issues, COPD, IBS, and Alzheimer’s.

#5. It might help fight cancer

Early evidence suggests that monk fruit extract may have anti-carcinogenic effects. It’s displayed an ability to inhibit skin and breast tumor growth, and it has proteins that have anticancer abilities.

#6. It has many other promising benefits

Monk fruit has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Specifically, it’s been shown to fight oral bacteria that cause tooth decay and periodontal disease. Further, studies show it might fight fatigue! It even seems to have an antihistamine effect when taken consistently, so it could be great if you struggle with allergies!

On top of all that, throughout history, monk fruit was used medicinally as a cough remedy, a treatment for constipation, and as a remedy for getting rid of fevers. More studies need to be done to confirm effectiveness but it could be promising.

The best part? Monk fruit works as a GREAT replacement for sugar in pretty much anything you can think of! Use it in your:

  • coffee

  • hot tea, iced tea, or lemonade

  • salad dressings

  • sauces

  • smoothies

  • baking

  • yogurt

  • oatmeal or other hot cereals
