This week we rounded up 7 Natural Cold Remedies that you can use to both prevent colds or help stop them in their tracks when you feel one coming on. 💪 Check them out below!
1️⃣ Elderberry Syrup 🫐
Elderberry is a lesser known fleshy fruit in comparison to its berry friends, and for unfortunate measures! It’s packed full of vitamins and antioxidants and has been used for a natural cold and flu remedy for centuries. One spoonful of elderberry syrup is said to remove your cold symptoms in just 48 hours. 🤯 You can easily make your own syrup at home using dried elderberries or find it ready made in most pharmacies like Walmart, Walgreens or Target. Plus, it makes a great gift this time of the year! 🎁
➡️ Take a few tablespoons of elderberry syrup throughout the day immediately after cold symptoms start! You can also take a spoonful a day to proactively boost your immune system.
2️⃣ Bone Broth 🍲
This nourishing, warm beverage is the stock just keeps on giving! Bone broth is so versatile, easy to make using leftover kitchen scraps and bones; and it’s loaded with insane amounts of vitamins, amino acids, collagen, minerals and protein! Not only does it boost your immune system, it also supports your joint health, weight loss efforts, anti-aging and digestive issues like leaky-gut! It’s easily available at pretty much any grocery store, but making a pot or two at home could give you enough bone broth to freeze and enjoy many times over! Give this simple bone broth recipe a try. 👩🍳
➡️ When a cold comes on, try to drink at least 2 or 3 cups of broth each day - it will also help hydrate you!
3️⃣ Vitamin C 🍊
You can get vitamin C by eating a healthy, balanced diet full of things like kale, grapefruit, peppers, strawberries or potatoes. However, adding a Vitamin C supplement, especially around cold season can give your body that extra boost it needs to fight off any unwanted germs! Lucky for you, you’ll find New Chapter Fermented Vitamin C supplements inside this month's box which is the perfect answer to your Vitamin C prayers! 🙏
➡️ Take 250mg daily for preventive measures, or 1000mg (ideally broken up into smaller doses throughout the day) to fight a cold!
4️⃣ Ginger 🍯
You’re probably used to eating ginger in some of your favorite asian dishes, but did ya know ginger is an immune boosting superhero!?! Seriously, It’s chock full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and well known as a home remedy for nausea, stomachaches, flu and that darn common cold. If eating raw ginger isn’t your thing, try sipping it!
➡️ Add sliced fresh ginger root and a splash of lemon juice to a mug of hot water (add honey if desired) and you’ve got yourself the perfect at home cold remedy! 👌
5️⃣ Stay hydrated 💦
Why is drinking more water always the answer to everything?! 😂 Jokes aside, hydration is crucial for fighting off germs and keeping your body in tip top shape to avoid catching colds in the first place! You can boost your hydration (and your immune system) by making sure you’re adding electrolytes to your regimen.
➡️ Try to DOUBLE your water intake when you’re fighting a cold (but be sure to add electrolytes in as well, to balance everything out!
➡️➡️➡️ BONUS: Try our easy DIY electrolyte recipe: simply mix 1 cup coconut water, 1 cup water, a pinch of salt and a splash of lemon juice and enjoy. You’ll be hydrated in no time. 😉
6️⃣ Use a Neti Pot 🫖
A neti pot is basically a shot of salt water through your sinus system to clean out mucus and debris that keep your nasal passages congested. I’m sorry, what?! Hang on, it’s not as crazy as it sounds! The neti pot originated in ancient India as an ayurvedic practice, but since has become Westernized with popularity and become more readily and easily available in over-the-counter products. You’ll likely see this in the form of saline nose sprays, like this one, that essentially do the same thing to help break up congestion. Either way you go, it works like a charm! 💯
➡️ Use it as soon as you feel some stuffiness coming on; and use as often as needed throughout the day (especially in the morning and before bed). Be sure to clean it in between uses!
7️⃣ Load up on Garlic & Onions 🧅
A clove of garlic a day keeps illness at bay. Onions, too! 😅 We mean it though, start piling the garlic and onions into your daily recipes. These two root veggies have antibacterial superpowers that have been boosting immune systems since the Stone Age.
➡️ Add these gems into your diet as much as you can when you feel a cold coming on. You could make garlic mashed potatoes, whip up a homemade onion dip or simply just make a big batch of veggie, garlic and onion soup!
➡️➡️➡️ BONUS: An ancient remedy we swear by is sleeping with cut onions in your socks when you feel a cold coming on! It sounds weird (and smelly) but it’s been believed to pull the toxins right out of your feet! Don’t knock it until you try it, it might just knock your socks off. 😉🧦
