Tahini: Meet Your New Favorite "Butter"

So you haven’t tried tahini, or maybe you’ve never even heard of tahini? Maybe you bought it once and now it’s collecting dust in the back of your pantry? We don’t want you missing out for one more minute because this super-ingredient needs to be in your kitchen!

What is tahini?

Tahini, or sesame paste, is ground sesame seeds and that’s it! Quality tahini will have just one ingredient, roasted sesame seeds, and no salt, oils, or fillers. Tahini should be smooth and creamy, but that’s not always the case. Some brands may be difficult to stir or have an oil slick on top. Look for tahini that is well emulsified and mixes easily if it does separate. There’s a reason we call our tahini “sesame butter” at Soom. Because it’s ultra-smooth and so velvety!


Is tahini good for you?

Tahini is a plant-based powerhouse thanks to the mighty sesame seed! This tiny but mighty seed is considered a superfood by many since it’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

What can you do with tahini?

The short answer? Everything! Although most people know it as the ingredient that makes hummus super creamy, tahini is actually incredibly versatile and easy to use. In many countries, it’s a staple in the kitchen that’s used in sauces, dressings, soups, and baked goods. Yep, you heard that right… you can bake with it!


Tahini is an excellent healthy alternative to butter and oils. It adds incredible moisture to cakes, brownies, and cupcakes plus you get the added benefits of plant-based protein and the micronutrients mentioned above.


Here are some easy ways to use tahini as a replacement for nuts, oils, and dairy:

  • Replace the milk in hot chocolate by boiling 1 cup of water and whisking in 2 tablespoons of tahini before adding hot cocoa mix

  • Replace the oil called for when preparing boxed cake mix with equal parts tahini

  • Use tahini instead of butter in chocolate chip or oatmeal cookies by replacing every ½ cup of butter with ½ cup of tahini + 1 tablespoon of water

  • Replace eggs when preparing boxed cookie mix by replacing each egg with 2 tablespoons of tahini mixed with 4 tablespoons of water

  • Make a vegan roux by replacing the butter with an equal volume of tahini

  • Make a tahini cream sauce of velouté by using the vegan roux from above

  • Replace the butter in muffins with an equal volume of tahini

  • Replace the heavy cream in truffles with an equal volume of tahini

  • Replace half the miso in ramen or soup recipes with tahini for a reduced sodium option that’s still loaded with flavor
