In the 90’s there was the Zone diet. Then in the 00’s, the Atkins Diet and Cayenne Lemonade detoxes were thought to be the recipe for success in overall health and weight management. Today in 2018, some of the most trendy (do we want to say trendy?) weight loss programs are the Paleo, Ketogenic, and AIP diets, as well as Whole30. We’ve got the quick and dirty on each of them!
Whole30: Created by Certified Sports Nutritionist, Melissa Hartwig, the Whole30 elimination diet program is centered on helping people change their relationship with food. It focuses on eating whole foods for 30 days, and eliminates all types of sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods. Eliminated foods can be slowly re-introduced after the 30-day period. If you’re looking to kick a sugar or coffee addiction, this program is the one for you!
Not only does it help you learn to love whole, unprocessed foods, the Whole30 diet can also be a tool for self diagnosing food allergies and sensitivities. Once you’ve removed triggering foods like caffeine and refined sugars from your diet, which can cause fatigue, inflammation, and anxiety, you’ll be much better attuned to how certain foods affect your physical and mental well-being.
Paleo: Often referred to as the stone age or caveman diet, the concept of the Paleo diet was created by a gastroenterologist in the 80s, and then popularized in the 2000’s by Dr. Loren Cordain’s book, The Paleo Diet. The basis of the Paleo diet, which is based on what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate, is that the consumption of grains is only a recent trend, that’s not compatible with our relatively sedentary modern lives. The program emphasises eating high quality meats, lots of vegetables and fruits, and some low GI carbohydrate sources, like sweet potato.
The Paleo diet has gained popularity steadily and exploded in the 2000’s, thanks in part to the Crossfit community. Those who follow it often report higher energy levels, better performance and stamina in high intensity workouts, and the appearance of a six pack!
AIP: Less popular but growing in notoriety is the AIP diet, or Autoimmmune Protocol. A specialized version of the Paelo diet, AIP is designed to help those suffering from digestive and hormonal imbalances to heal their body and reduce inflammation in the gut. AIP takes Paleo one step further, eliminating all potential irritants and inflammatory foods, including alcohol, dairy, legumes, soy, processed foods, and even grains; and emphasises using food as medicine. Once you’ve established an AIP diet, you can slowly reintroduce foods and find a diet plan that works for your specific digestive requirements.
Keto: Did you see our recent post about butter in your coffee?! Butter coffee is popular with those who follow a ketogenic diet, which is designed to trick your body into using fat as fuel, instead of carbohydrates (sugar). Eating ‘keto’ means consuming lots of grass-fed butter, high quality proteins and vegetables, and other sources of health fats, like avocado and coconut oil. A low-carb diet, Keto might be a good fit for you if you’d like to lose weight but don’t find yourself in the gym often.
