Detox Isn’t Just a Buzzword… How Your Liver Keeps Your Whole Body Functioning Properly

 Your liver is the largest solid organ in the body, and is arguably one of the most important, performing over 500 vital tasks. It serves as the body’s primary filtration system: responsible for cleansing your blood (removing hormones, alcohol, as well as environmental and other toxins), converting harmful toxins to waste, and metabolizing sugar, micronutrients (vitamin and minerals) and macronutrients (proteins, carbs, and fats). In short: it processes the good stuff you put into your body, and gets rid of the nasties. Talk about a super organ!

 

The word “detox” is thrown around a lot these days, but what does it mean?! “Detoxing” is basically just the act of removing toxins from your body - namely, your blood - so that the cells in your body can perform optimally. There are several ways to promote detoxification, such as:

 

  • Stimulating the liver to remove toxins from the body

  • Encouraging elimination through the intestines, kidneys, and skin

  • Increasing blood circulation

  • Eliminating toxins from your diet/lifestyle, such as alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats

  • Refueling the body with healthy, important nutrients

 

The liver is part of the immune system, so when it’s not working properly, you’re much more at risk for infection and viruses. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your liver! If you are experiencing some of the following symptoms, you may want to consider detoxing:

 

  • Fatigue

  • Allergies

  • Skin issues

  • Low-grade infection

  • Bloating

  • Mental fogginess
