Head-to-Toe Health Strategies You Need to Stay on Top Of

June 28, 2019

When you were younger, you were eager to wish away your childhood years in favor of becoming an adult. The promises of freedom and independence were so enticing, but now that you’ve arrived at adulthood, you’ve realized it’s a lot harder than you thought. Without parents and guardians to rely on to take care of you, you have to take charge and take care of your health and well-being. You have the basics covered such as food and sleep, but don’t forget about these important health strategies to really kick this adulting thing into high gear.

Befriend the Eye Doctor

Scheduling and keeping a doctor’s appointment is no small feat, and when you only have to go for an eye exam every two years, it’s easy to keep pushing it off. Your eyesight tends to decline as you get older, and a comprehensive eye exam ensures that you are able to see clearly and there aren’t any eye diseases or abnormalities coming into play. If you notice any vision changes such as difficulty seeing at night, vision disruptions, eye fatigue, light sensitivity, or blurriness, schedule an appointment to find a solution.

Avoid the Urge to Skimp on Dental Hygiene

“Did you brush your teeth?” It’s the question you were asked what felt like millions of time as a child, and for good reason. Oral health has a direct connection to your overall health. Your mouth is often referred to as the window into your health status, and it is often the place where symptoms of diseases such as diabetes show up first. What’s more, the saliva in your mouth is your largest defense against bacteria and viruses. Lack of brushing and flossing also leads to plaque buildup, which in turn can result in gum disease and cavities. Be sure to brush twice a day, including your tongue, and floss after meals to remove food particles and plaque.

Schedule Time for R&R

Although taking time for rest & relaxation might seem self-indulgent, getting away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind — even for a few days — can work wonders on your overall well-being. Fortunately, you don’t need to head out of state (or even the city) to enjoy a break from it all. A staycation, for example, allows you to step away from your daily life and take in the sights and sounds that are all around you. In Austin, you can plan your staycation around the annual South by Southwest festival if you’re into movies and music; you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy independent and acclaimed films making their Stateside debuts. If you’re more the outdoorsy type, head out to one of the many lakes that Austin has to offer, giving you countless opportunities for fun and relaxation in the sun. Spring for a vacation rental property instead of a hotel, which will allow you to find a place with a full kitchen so you can stick to your healthy diet by cooking meals “at home.” The rental could also put you within walking distance of every activity you want to enjoy during your break.

Anxiety Isn’t Something You Just Deal With

Getting older brings its fair share of stress, but anxiety isn’t something you just have to accept. It’s actually very common, with 40 million people being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder according to statistics cited by Time.com. Unfortunately, many people don’t seek out treatment or help. If you are feeling anxious, whether it is constant or sporadic, talk with your doctor. In addition, you can treat anxiety naturally. Some of the most common relaxation techniques are exercise, meditation, aromatherapy, and spending time with animals. However, a method you may have started hearing more about is cannabidiol (CBD) oil. More research is pointing to its effectiveness in treating anxiety symptoms, providing a less addictive and more natural method of relief as opposed to medication. CBD-infused gummies make the delivery process simpler and tastier, helping to ease you into your first experience with CBD. As always, before you try anything new, be sure to talk with your doctor.

Regular Exercise Is Crucial

Although you might not have the energy you had when you were a kid, regular exercise can boost your energy and your mood. When your heart rate goes up, your body releases endorphins that increase your energy level and give you that feeling of euphoria. That energy leaves you more mentally sharp, focused, and ready to tackle whatever life throws at you. You’ll likely sleep better at night too, and over time, you’ll improve your heart health, strength, and stamina. Exercise is also a great form of preventive care. The gym can be a little intimidating, so foster your love of exercise by taking a class or working with a fitness coach. You’ll learn the correct way to exercise to make it enjoyable, as well as make new friends in the process.

Part of being a successful adult is taking care of your health. However, the only person you have to answer to is yourself. So, make it a point to stay on top of important health strategies so you can keep on keeping on.
